Do Something Out of the Ordinary

Today I would like to ask everyone reading my blog to do an act that is out of the ordinary for you.  Maybe even do something the opposite of how you usually do it (but please, don’t hit the reverse and drive backwards down the street).  I will do it myself as well.  Sometimes throwing a curve ball at life and the people around you is a good way to assert your desire to be active and present in life.  You wish to change the world, and you have no problem with acting different, because you know your foundations are strong and a little wind will not topple your tower, it will only reinforce your faith in how strong you are.

If by chance you feel uneasy doing something out of the ordinary or feel like it would not be good for your reputation, that is even more incentive to do it.  We all have imaginary restrictions on our everyday lives.  For some people it is dress code.  Others it is intelligence.   And still others might be restricted by physical strength.  We place the restrictions ourselves or let others do that for us.  It makes life seem a little easier, doesn’t it?  

Remembering once what one of my patients said to me (I am a Paramedic), he asked me:

“You played sports in highschool, right?”

“Yes, I played soccer all 4 years, and indoors in the winter.”

“And you didn’t play basketball?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Why not?” he asked me.

“I dunno, I guess I’m not tall enough.”

After that he literally exploded.  Being an overexcited high school basketball coach, he mopped the floor with me about my imaginary limitation.  Too short is not an excuse.  In reality, I was never really interested in playing basketball because I loved soccer too much (which is another story), but the situation made me think nonetheless.  How many other imaginary limitations do we have?  Can we even count all of them?  What I am going to do after finishing this post is making a list of as many of mine as I can think of in 15 minutes.  Writing them down is the best way to do it, because it forces you to externalize what has been trailing in your subconscious.  This makes you really conscious of your self-imposed limitations.  And it is after that that you can begin tackling them, when you can see physically in written form what they are.  So I am giving you more homework to do as well.  Please feel free to share them with me.
